Before handing over a large amount of folding for a pedigree pooch, look at the rescue options. There are always loads to choose from. But whatever you decide, don't take having a dog as a joke. It's a serious commitment.

BGW, I've not heard of a Pomeranian but have just googled it and what you said makes sense. I have some friends who have a Dachshund, really gives it the big one, it's quite lairy and can appear quite vicious, but doesn't do any damage so gets away with being 'cute'. Whereas on the other hand a Staff or Rott is quite powerful gets a bad press on it's looks, yet are obedient dogs who keep themselves to themselves..

I can relate to that entirely as we have recently rehomed a male 11 monther to accompany our 4 year old bitch
Bitch small for breed and an adorable looking beast that everyone loves, hairy bollox is big for the breed and is often confused for an akita or mumulete cross, handsome fucker that he is, he still terrifies some at first sight

She's our first rotty, previously had retrievors, so a completely different reaction. Yep, still a stigma attached sadly, I know when people ask me after finding out we've a new puppy, "what breed" and we tell them, they either say, "oh" (if they've not had one) or "wow, what a great breed" and then relate to them/friend/relative having had one and it was the best family dog ever.
At the minute she's a soppy sack of shit and just falls on the floor every time we meet someone for her to have her tummy rubbed.
On a side not my sister in law has a Pomeranian and it's a vicious fucker, bit over 10 people but cause it's small she gets away with it

Grumpster, saw that too. When it went to Noel fitzpatrick's clinich I thought if anyone could save him it would be Noel. But his legs were truly knackered, bless him. Again, not ashamed to say it but I was welling up.

BGW, I don't know how long you've had a Rott, but do you find that sometimes you get strange reactions from people? Reason I ask, is i have a stafffie and I was saddened when I first got her that people still stereotype certain breeds of dog. I remember a man, pulling his (I assume) grandchild out of the way and crossing the road when he saw me and Socks coming around the corner. I was offended, knowing that she is as gentle as anything, even though she's a stocky little muscle tank. I make a point of going up to Dobes, Rotts, Sheps and Staffs cos they get a raw deal, still. Such a shame.

For the love of dogs had a heart breaker in it this week with the puppy Great Dane having to be put down.
Watching that does make me think I should get a dog from battersea next instead of a puppy.
Also shows what scum is out there with the adorable little Jack Russell (dog I normally dislike) who had the huge gash in its neck from a collar.
Love a dog like you'd love your own children and reap the benefits of how much they will worship you back.

My Rottweiler puppy is 13wks old, beautiful creature, got huge attitude and needs a strong consistent handler but you just know she's going to grow up the most loyal dog a owner can want. Just ask anyone who's ever had one.

Sold, I watched that film on a plane recently and I have to admit I had a few tears welling up, son.
Malanois are very loyal. Sheps, I love em too. Good thing they have shaken off the demon dog of years past like the Rott and Dobe. That's what I love about em, their loyalty.
(Not like cats Nurse, the only reason they rub themselves up against your leg is that they're stroking themselves ag)
I've never owned a lab, but have met many on my walks and they are lovely, something about their eyes and their nature that tells me they would be a great family pet.

Great 90 mins over the fields/country park this morning... felt like the first day of winter ... which is Labrador heaven... must of been in the lake for about 20 mins going backward and forwards... got him back to the motor covered in mud (thro the walk back) absolutely shattered ... apart from eating his dinner he has not moved from his seat/bed.
Watched a decent film last night... Max... all about a Belgian Malanois that is suffering with PTSD after it's Marine handler gets killed in Afghanistan... the star of the film is the hound...

Especially if you have kids. Staffies are one of two (I think) breeds that the Kennel Club recommend as being good with children.

Taken a break from the errant teenagers to North Devonwith the Mrs and hounds this week
Only hounds would have got me down that beach today, the wind blew the rain and sand horizontal - what a wonderful afternoon I would have missed without them though and they have been looking at me thankfully since, all their Christmases in one that

We have a Tibetan Terrier and a Mini Schnauzer....the Schnauzer is the most friendly and funny dog I've ever seen and I would I highly recommend...
Our Tibetan is a psycho.

You know those lithe, energetic lean ones that get used as Gun Dogs?
Well he's nothing like that. Fetching is for mugs as far as he is concerned.
He eats.
He walks.
He swims a bit but mostly paddles.
He hangs out with his mates.
He likes a cup of tea in the morning.
He's basically a four legged hairy teenager leeching off of my funds with no useful skills.
